History

In 1900 a hunting lodge was built on a game preserve of 16,000 acres along the Hillsborough River. The land belonged to a land owner from Illinois who sold it to his brother, et al to develop. A portion of the land was developed into lots and the remaining 5,000 acres were planted in Temple oranges. The City of Temple Terrace was incorporated in the mid 1920’s.

Sometime in 1946, the president of the Temple Terrace Civic Association decided that a garden club had become a necessity for the city to aid in the beautification of the City. After joining the Tampa Federation of Garden Club Circles in October 1946, the Temple Terrace Garden Club became independent and was granted full club status with the FFGC in October 1947.

As the first club in the City, the TTGC was a place for ladies to gather for tea, hold social events, card party luncheons and fundraisers. Supporting the City with beautification projects continues today with our commitment to Woodmont Park and the Woodmont Clubhouse Association. The hunting lodge (now Woodmont Clubhouse) is home to the TTGC and monthly work-days keep members involved in maintaining the adjacent park, the only City park main-tained by a club/organization.

Fundraisers through the year have changed with the times but for the past 37 years our biggest fundraiser has been our annual poinsettia sale with 1325 plants sold in 2007. Our "Spring Market" proceeds fund our work in Woodmont Park and “Sunday In The Park” proceeds go directly to charity. Our Poinsettia sales, Caladium sales, plant sales, Christmas boutiques, etc. help fund our operating budget.

Monthly day and evening programs on horticulture and design, encourage and educate members in the latest plants and techniques. Fun With Flowers programs teach members how to easily beautify their own home with fresh cut flowers. Field trips, flower shows and workshops, help round out member educational opportunities and create wonderful fellowship. From 35 women who gathered to help beautify their City through plants and trees, the TTGC has grown to over 100 members who gather with the goal of education in the fields of horticulture, gardening, design and environmental education.
